Best Portrait Photography Locations in Old Town Alexandria, VA
One of the most common questions I get from clients before a session is "where should we shoot?" It is a great question and the answer depends on your style, the type of session you are booking, and the time of year. Old Town Alexandria is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in the entire DC metro area, and after shooting here extensively I have developed a deep appreciation for its hidden gems and iconic backdrops. Here are my favorite locations and the best times to use them.
Captain's Row (100 Prince Street)
Captain's Row is one of my absolute favorite spots in Old Town and for good reason. This is the city's oldest cobblestone block, lined with beautifully preserved Federal style homes, glowing gas lamps, and doors painted in rich, jewel toned colors. The texture and character here are unmatched anywhere else in Alexandria. It works beautifully for engagement sessions, glamour portraits, and personal branding shoots where you want something that feels both timeless and distinctly local.
Wilkes Street Tunnel
The Wilkes Street Tunnel is a hidden gem that not enough people know about. This charming, rustic tunnel offers a dramatic architectural backdrop with beautiful light that filters through in a way that is genuinely difficult to replicate in any other setting. It is one of those locations that surprises clients when they see their images because the results always feel more cinematic than expected. It is particularly well suited for dramatic individual portraits and editorial style couples sessions.
Carlyle House Gardens
For clients who want something refined and romantic, the Carlyle House Gardens are hard to beat. The meticulously manicured grounds, historic architecture, and lush green and floral backdrops create an elegant setting that works exceptionally well for engagement photography and formal portrait sessions. Please note that a permit is required for professional photography shoots at this location. I handle the logistics of this as part of your session planning so you do not need to worry about the details.
Wales Alley (near Lee Street)
Wales Alley is one of those quietly special spots that rewards clients who are willing to explore a little off the beaten path. This intimate historic alleyway offers charming textures, weathered brick, and a sense of quiet that is rare in a busy neighborhood. It is an ideal backdrop for portraits that feel personal and unhurried, and it photographs beautifully in almost any light condition.
Waterfront Park and Docks
The Alexandria waterfront is one of the most versatile locations in the area. The expansive views of the Potomac River, the boat docks, and the open sky create a backdrop that adapts beautifully to almost any session type. Whether you are booking an engagement session, a personal branding shoot, or individual portraits, the waterfront consistently delivers. It is also one of the best spots in Old Town for sunrise and sunset sessions, which brings me to timing.
The Best Times to Shoot in Old Town
Timing makes an enormous difference in outdoor portrait photography and Old Town has some particularly special windows worth planning around.
Sunrise and sunset are the golden hours for the waterfront and the parks. The soft, warm light at these times wraps around subjects naturally and creates that quality of image that clients always respond to most strongly.
Blue hour, the short window just after sunset when the sky turns a deep, luminous blue, is ideal for King Street. When the street lamps and shop lights begin to twinkle against that backdrop the results are genuinely magical and unlike anything you can achieve at any other time of day.
Spring is a season worth planning your session around if you have any flexibility. The cherry blossoms and wisteria that bloom throughout Old Town in spring create a softness and color that elevates almost any portrait. These blooms are fleeting, typically lasting only a few weeks, so booking early in the season is always a good idea.
